MISSION STATEMENT
The Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004 caused more than 200,000 deaths and inflicted multi-billion dollar damage on infrastructure. The death toll of the Pakistan earthquake in 2005 is estimated at over 70,000. Asian countries are becoming increasingly vulnerable to various types of disasters including landslides, floods, droughts, forest fires, typhoons and man-made hazards. But, they have displayed very limited capacity in terms of their knowledge base, skills training, long-term planning, emergency preparedness and policy development to respond to such disasters.
The aim of this new academic program is to instill the necessary interdisciplinary capacities to manage and minimize the effects of disasters in people on the front lines of disaster response and preparedness. Upon completion of the program, graduates will have gained a profound scientific understanding of natural and man-made disasters. They will be able to assess risks properly; to construct disaster management plans using appropriate tools and techniques; and, to apply suitable measures to mitigate risk. They will possess the skills necessary for handling complex emergency situations and to communicate with various stakeholders and policy makers on issues associated with disaster preparedness, mitigation and management. Given these skills and expertise, program graduates will be ready to play a leading role in protecting Asia`s large populations from the full force of a rising tide of disasters

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT
Applicants with engineering, architecture, natural and social sciences, and management backgrounds are eligible to apply for this program. Those with backgrounds in relevant fields of study or work experiences will be given priority for selection. 1. Health Social Science Scholarship Program at Mahidol University
We are pleased to announce that we have scholarships available for our Health Social Science International Program (HSSIP) at Mahidol University in Thailand.
The Ford Foundation and The Rockefeller Foundation are providing a number of scholarships for the 22-month program that begins July 2008, and there will be additional space for those who can obtain their own source of funding.
The applicants eligible for the scholarships are those from China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, Vietnam and Thailand. The program provides a multidisciplinary social science approach (sociological, anthropological, economic and psychological) to develop an understanding of how social determinants play roles in affecting health, well- being and illness.

2. Beasiswa Post.Doc.SEA-UEMA Project
Applications are invited for post-doctoral research fellowships under the Southeast Asia Urban Environmental Management Applications (SEA-UEMA) project.
This is a partnership project between the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Asian Institute of Technology. Its goal is to contribute to the improvements of urban environmental conditions in Southeast Asia. It seeks to attain improved implementation and sharing of sound urban environmental management policies and practices. The focus of the project is on three key urban environmental sub-sectors, water and sanitation, solid waste and air pollution, with gender equality and poverty reduction as the two crosscutting themes.
Fellowship Details
The post-doctoral fellowships are one year funded positions for applied research on UEM practices and policies. Fellows will be required to produce a publication at the conclusion of research activities.
Selected candidates will receive:
- A fellowship of 50,000 Baht per month towards living costs
- Research fund of up to 150,000 Baht on cost-reimbursable basis
- Round trip economy travel expenses
- Office space,equipments,access to internet and academic facilities in AIT
- Opportunity to be involved in teaching master students and be a member in their thesis committee
Selection Criteria
Candidates should be graduates with a doctoral degree. Research and work experience in UEM or a related field is required. The research proposed under the fellowship should focus on practices and policies related to any of the three sub-sectors: water and sanitation, solid waste and air pollution
The applicant must be from Canadian ODA eligible Southeast Asian countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Timor-Leste, Thailand and Vietnam)
Research in collaboration with other organizations will be encouraged
Good and effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills are required

Qualified female applicants are strongly encouraged to apply. An application must be accompanied with a complete curriculum vitae, reprints of publications and a research proposal clearly indicating objectives and research design. The proposal must also indicate the scope of integrating gender equality. Names of two referees with their contact information must be provided.

Southeast Asia Research Fellowship Programme for Young Muslim Scholars 2007
The Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) is pleased to announce the sixth
round of the research fellowship program, Islam in Southeast Asia: View
from within.
The fellowship grants will be awarded for
innovative research on issues concerning economic, socio-political and
cultural changes taking place in the diverse Muslim communities of
Southeast Asia, especially as they relate to modernization and
globalization.

Popular Islam
"Popular Islam" focuses on encouraging researchers to examine ways in which
Islamic beliefs and practices reach all believers and are reflected
through various means of religious. communication such as studying
Khutbah in local mosques, reading Islamic booklets, and/ or listening
to Muslim radio programs. The question of how Islam can shape and
influence, while at the same time is being shaped by, the lives of
ordinary Southeast Asian Muslims in various local contexts is just one
aspect of this topic that could be analyzed.
Globalization and Identity Politics
Muslim communities in Southeast Asia are not immune from globalization
processes. New forms of economic and political integration on a world
scale and the accelerated flows of goods, people and information across
the globe all create new opportunities and challenges for Muslims in
the region. The interaction of global and regional forces with local
processes has been perceived both as a threat to Muslim identities and
as beneficial to the development of a new transnational Islam. This
research theme seeks to explore how Muslim identities in Southeast Asia
are formed and shaped by regional and globalizing forces.
Islam and Changing Gender Realities
Rapidly evolving social, cultural and economic processes are leading to
unprecedented changes in the societal roles of men and women. Muslim
communities in Southeast Asia are being confronted with a diversity of
values and lifestyles expressing multiple definitions of gender roles
and relationships not always in line with dominant values. This
research area encourages researchers to examine how gender roles in
both the public and private sphere are changing for Muslims in
Southeast Asia and relate those changes to current theological and
political debates.
Islam Values, Economic Activities and Social Responsibilities
Studies in this area should examine how Islamic values and institutions can
provide alternative economic options to those perceived as
condradictory to Qur`anic principles such as riba. Area of focus could
include identifying how Islamic economic values work in a modern
business environment, analysis of indigenous entrepreneurial models
that have been or can be utilized for local level empowerment and/ or
studies of the lives of entrepreneurs and the ways Islamic values shape
and are re-shaped by their economic activities and social
responsibilities.
Eligibility
Candidates must be nationals of Southeast Asian countries, hold at least a Bachelor degree and should not be over 40 years of age.
Candidates may work in different sectors including academia, media, and non-governmental organizations. Candidate must be highly motivated to deepen their
understanding of Islam in the region.
Women are strongly encouraged to apply.
Fellowship Value
The fellowship consists of an average research grant of $5,000 to cover all
research costs for a maximum period of six months in the original
country of resercher, and funded participation in mentoring workshops.
The Secretariat will arrange for editing, publication and distribution of the report in a "work in progress" series.
Application Procedure
To apply for this fellowship program, candidates need to submit a complete
research proposal. Proposed research projects should include sufficient
details so that it can be judged for its merit and feasibility.

Program Management
The fellowship program is managed by the AMAN secretariat, which is housed
at the Asian Resource Foundation (ARF) in Bangkok, Thailand.
AMAN
was established in 1990 with the goal of building understanding and
solidarity among Muslims and with other faith communities in Asia
towards people`s empowerment, human rights, justice and peace. AMAN`s
Council consists of eleven members representing various Asian
countries, with Dr. Asghar Ali Engineer of the center for study of
society and secularism, India as chairman.
