Phd Scholarship Economics, Computer Sciences & Politics
Beasiswa S3 Ekonomi, Komputer dan Politik
PhD positions(Computer Sciences, Economics, & Politics), IMT
Competitions for admission are open in the following PhD Programs at IMT:
1. Economics, Markets, Institutions
With its interdisciplinary (theoretical, quantitative and
institutional) approach, the program aims at dealing with issues in
political economy, applied public economics, and the functioning of
industries and markets, the impact of macroeconomic impact on the
functioning of markets, as well as on productivity and growth.
A distinctive character of the PhD program is the strong integration
of theoretical, technical and practical expertise, aimed to educate
highly qualified professionals, who analyze, plan, and manage concrete
interventions of political economy.
Theoretical methodologies and models will therefore tested through the
methodical/systematic investigation of actual cases. At the end of the
program, students will be able to catch commonalities as well as
distinctive characters of the several markets, in reference to
economic laws, market regulations, contractual, managing and
organizational solutions.
2. Computer Science and Engineering
Theories developed within computer science have been, and still are,
remarkably relevant not only for developing devices and tools which
are commonly used in today society, but also for facing new
theoretical problems of wide perspective. In particular, the study of
models, algorithms and verification methods of distributed systems
with shared resources, with attention to the problems of security,
concurrency, real time, "open endness", distributed decisions, etc.
has fostered the development of the informatics of the new wide area
networks. Students acquire extensive knowledge of the fundamentals and
applications of architectures and languages for global and grid
computing, web systems and services, in particular for business
applications, embedded systems, web data mining, wired and wireless
networks, and mobile systems. In addition to offering broad scope for
basic research, these domains define a professional area where all the
needs of computer applications on wide are networks can find their
fulfilment.
3. Political Systems and Institutional Change
The PhD Program aims to make students familiar with analytical tools
and methodologies of investigation elaborated within different
contemporary traditions in social sciences, thereby providing the
theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to both evaluate
comparatively the performance of institutional systems, and elaborate
proposals for structural reforms. The courses will especially focus on
the historical, political, institutional and economic dynamics that
have been characterising the development of European and ex Soviet
countries after the Second Word War. They will then consider among
other topics: the institutional and decisional dynamics of European
countries and the European Union including the trends towards
multilevel governance both at the European and at the domestic level
(federalisation, independent regulatory authorities, etc.);
transatlantic relations EU-US; relations between politics, social
processes and political economy decisions; paths of economic and
political development; the institutional workings of international
organisations; the characters of some geographical areas of special
relevance.
Duration: 3 years
Language: Courses and seminars are held in English. Foreign PhD
students are required to attend an Italian Language and Culture Course.
Classes begin in March 2009.

Bluetongue in the Danish population of ruminants”(cattle and sheep).
IMM Graduate School ITMAN would like to invite applications for a
fully funded PhD scholarship (1/1) for the project “Mathematical
modelling of Bluetongue in the Danish population of ruminants” (cattle
and sheep). The PhD is partly funded by the Danish Dairy Board
(Mejeriforeningen).
The project focuses on the use of mathematical models for predicting
the spread of the disease Bluetongue in the Danish population of
ruminants. Bluetongue is a notifiable viral disease affecting cattle
and sheep and is spread between animals by biting midges. The
hypothesis is that the spread of Bluetongue in Denmark can be
predicted by utilising mathematical models, demographic data of the
population of ruminants, and the population of midges. These models
can be used to predict what is likely to happen with the disease
occurrence if various alternative control strategies are adopted (e.g.
vaccination and culling strategies).
The 3 year PhD scholarship should be started as soon as possible after
September 1st 2008. The PhD student will be enrolled at the

Beasiswa S3: PhD positions UNESCO-IHE
Beasiswa S3: Three (3) Sanitation Related PhD Positions
PhD positions available at UNESCO-IHE in collaboration with Makerere
University and the Kampala City Council in Uganda
An interdisciplinary research program entitled "*Integrated approaches and
strategies to address the Sanitation Crisis in Unsewered Slum Areas in
African mega-cities (SCUSA)*", funded by the UNESCO-IHE Partnership Research
Fund (UPaRF), will be carried out by UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water
Education (Delft, The Netherlands), Makerere University, and the Kampala
City Council, both in Uganda.
The SCUSA research program addresses one of the most relevant developmental
issues worldwide: a reduction of under-5 child mortality rates due to
water-borne diseases, and malnutrition in low-income unplanned urban
settlements. As such, the project will contribute to the realization of
Millenium Development Goal 7, Target 10 (i.e. to halve, by 2015, the
proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water). The
SCUSA research program has identified three projects, centered around a slum
area of Kampala. To carry out these research projects, three strongly
interdisciplinary PhD positions are vacant.
Project description
The development and expansion of informal settlements in the peri-urban
areas of African cities is widespread, while these cities harbour the
majority of the urban population. Peri-urban areas, or slums, are
characterized by, among other things, poorly constructed houses, poor water
supply and sanitary conditions, and lack or inadequate support services.
Besides the spreading of diseases related to surface water (e.g. malaria),
one of the main problems associated with sanitation and water in peri-urban
areas is related to the pollutant load entering and leaving the peri-urban
catchment, either as surface water or groundwater. This water is polluting
drinking water (with increased incidence of cholera and diarrhoea) or
eutrophying surface water, due to extremely high nutrient fluxes discharged
from the surrounding catchments. As a result, the main research question of
the SCUSA research program is: *How to improve sanitation in peri-urban
urban slum areas?*
Ph.D. project 1: Wastewater and solid waste treatment and reusePh.D. project
2: The socio-economic aspects of improving sanitation Ph.D. project 3:
Hydrology and contaminant transport*The following applies to all 3 Ph.D.
positions:*
- All topics will be carried out in a so-called sandwich construction
with different phases at UNESCO-IHE in the Netherlands and field research in
Uganda (with regular contacts with Ugandan and Dutch supervisors).
- PhD positions are funded with a fellowship for which NUFFIC regulations
apply.
- Starting date: January 1, 2009, for 4 years.
- Qualifications: MSc degree (average mark: 80% or above) in a discipline
relevant to the topic, e.g. environmental engineering, sanitation,
socio-economics of the water sector, water resource economics, hydrology and
water resources.
- The applicant must demonstrate a strong interest and experience in
conducting interdisciplinary research.
- The applicant must be willing to do research in a team, share his
results with the SCUSA research team and advise fellow Ph.D. researchers
when necessary.
- The applicant should be willing to co-supervise MSc research projects.
- The applicant must be fluent in English (e.g. TOEFL paper based score
of at least 550).
- Excellent reporting skills and shown ability to publish in the
scientific literature.
- Knowledge of the African sanitation field is desirable.
- Age: 40 years and below.
For questions, please mail Prof. Dr. Frank Kansiime (
fkansiime@muienr.mak.ac.ug) or Dr. Jan Willem Foppen of UNESCO-IHE (
j.foppen@unesco-ihe.org).
Applications, including curriculum vitae, a motivation letter and 2 letters
of recommendation, as well as the names and contact details of three
contactable referees, all in one pdf file, should be sent by email to
t.morgenstond@unesco-ihe.org before *September 1st 2008*.
Please mention in the subject heading "PhD application SCUSA project *x*",
where *x* refers to the Ph.D. projects mentioned above. Short-listed
candidates will be contacted before October 1st 2008 to set a date of an
interview, possibly via video-conferencing.

Scholarship at Spain For Msc / Phd in Wireless Communications and Multimedia Signalling
MSc/PhD students in Wireless Communications and Multimedia Signalling
Call for MSc / PhD students in the area of wireless communications and
multimedia signalling NeTS Research Group Universitat Pompeu Fabra,
Barcelona, Spain NeTS is looking for students coming from renowned universities from
around the world, with a very good grade record, who have a very high
interest in wireless communications, specially those based on the IEEE
802.11 principles, including sensor, adhoc, infrastructure WLANs and
mesh networks.
We are also looking for students passionate about
multimedia communications in the Internet, and the protocols
associated to it. We seek students with a strong background on
communications networks, coming from electrical engineering, computer
science or related fields. Paramount is a desire to learn and push the
limits of current technology, as well as providing new insight into
today’s and tomorrow’s networks and services.
The accepted candidates will participate in several projects in tight
cooperation with other researchers from our group. Positions available
are:
1 PhD / MSc position in “Next Generation Multimedia Signalling for the
multitechnology, multiservice Internet”. The Internet is undergoing a
dramatic evolution through new architectural paradigms, like the NGNs,
P2Pbased signalling and applications, mobile and wireless access
networks and the like. There is a necessity to design a new set of
integrated signalling protocols, which permit to control the
transmission of multimedia traffic over such heterogeneous networks.
IMS is the current best practice in that area, but its many
shortcomings and high complexity suggest to explore new approaches
that go beyond IMS, like P2PSIP based systems. The goal of this PhD,
thus, is to design, evaluate and standardize new signalling protocols
for the Internet of the future. We offer a three year grant to PhD
students with a MSc already finished. Moreover, for students without a
MsC a four year grant is also possible with the requirement to follow
our master program during the first year.
1 PhD / MSc position in “Reconfigurable, adaptive and selforganized
sensor networks”. Sensor networks are formed by small, inexpensive and
resource limited devices that can interact with the environment
(sensing or actuating) and communicate wirelessly with other devices.
The work will consist in the design and implementation of a complete
new protocol stack based on collaborative and crosslayer techniques,
including power control routing algorithms, reconfigurable PHY/MAC
protocols and adaptive self organized multihop clustering algorithms.
1 PhD / MSc position in “Modeling adaptive traffic flows over capacity
varying wireless mesh networks”. Current WLANs suffer from various
impairments which reduce their ability to carry multimedia flows
satisfactorily. One of them is the intrinsic variable capacity due to
the multiple transmission rates used and caused by the distributed
random access to the channel. The proposed thesis will consider the
definition of a mathematical framework to analyze multichannel
wireless mesh networks, based on the IEEE 802.11s/n prestandard, in
order to optimize the QoS and signalling mechanisms (e.g. based on P2P
paradigms) to adapt properly the multimedia traffic sources (such as
VoIP, video streaming).

PhD position available in RNA and Infection Biology
Doctoral program in RNA Biology
Max F. Perutz Laboratories,
University of Vienna, Austria
Description:
A PhD position is available to study the role of small RNAs in the regulation of virulence in Streptococcus pyogenes. S. pyogenes is a gram-positive bacterial pathogen responsible for life-threatening diseases in humans. The capacity of this pathogen to initiate its virulence program and consequently cause disease depends on complex regulatory processes that control the expression of virulence factors in response to changing environmental conditions. In the proposed project, we are interested in understanding how a novel class of molecules, regulatory small RNAs, interfere in these processes by fine-tuning gene expression.
Our lab is part of the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (http://www.mfpl.ac.at/). MFPL is located at the Vienna Biocenter Campus, which comprises several private and university research institutes in molecular life sciences (http://www.viennabiocenter.org/), thus offering a highly interactive and international research environment.
The PhD position is integrated in the doctoral program in RNA biology (http://www.projects.mfpl.ac.at/dk-rna-biology/), which is part of the Vienna Biocenter International PhD Program in Molecular Life Science (http://www.univie.ac.at/vbc/PhD/). The position is a full-time position for three years with a competitive salary funded by the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF). Highly qualified applicants from all over the world are invited to apply, provided that they are not older than 30 years. All applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a university degree equivalent to a European university diploma / degree within the second half of 2008. Prior hands-on experience in molecular biology is highly desirable.
