Headship
The University of the Witwatersrand is located in the heart of Johannesburg, one of Africa’s leading multicultural cities and the economic hub of South and Southern Africa. The Faculty of Engineering & the Built Environment is seeking a suitably qualified person to head the School of Mining Engineering which is highly recognised nationally and internationally for teaching, research and industry partnerships.
Qualifications: The successful appointee will possess high-level managerial skills; an earned doctoral degree, high national and/or international, academic and professional standing and expertise in any of the technical disciplines in mining. The Primary Objectives are to: Provide the academic vision and leadership required to enable the School to establish and maintain a position of excellence within the University and in the wider educational context by offering nationally and internationally accredited programmes. Lead and manage the School in meeting its and the Faculty’s strategic goals. Participate in University-wide decision-making processes towards achieving the University’s strategic goals. Raise external funding for special projects within the School.
The successful applicant would be expected to take up the position on 1 January 2010 or soon thereafter. The standard period of employment is 5 years after which the candidate may seek another term or be integrated into a senior teaching and research position in the School, or if the appointee is an existing member of the permanent staff, will revert to his/her previous academic position. Remuneration will be appropriate to the seniority of the position and will be negotiated on an individual basis.
