Scholarship in Netherlands
Project and job description
We are looking for a strongly motivated PhD candidate to strengthen the medical acoustical imaging group of the Laboratory of Acoustical Imaging and Sound Control. The preferred candidate will work together with the Erasmus MC Rotterdam and Oldelft Ultrasound in Delft on the development of a matrix transducer for TransEsophageal Echocardiography (TEE). This transducer will be used to obtain real-time three-dimensional images of the beating heart from out of the oesophagus with ultrasound. He/she develop algorithms for computing the radiation pattern of the transducer, for modelling the non-linear propagation and scattering of acoustic wave fields in inhomogeneous media and for (harmonic) imaging. The PhD student is encouraged to publish his/her work in journals and to visit international conferences.
The successful candidate will be employed by the TU Delft for a fixed period of 4 years within which he or she is expected to write a dissertation leading to a doctoral degree (PhD thesis).
Requirements
Applicants should have an MSc degree with a background in physics, (electrical) engineering or mathematics and posses a strong interest in modelling, signal processing and medical imaging. It is an advantage to have experience in programming with FORTRAN and Matlab. Candidates also need to have developed social and communicational skills.
Organization
The Laboratory of Acoustical Imaging and Sound Control is part of the Department of Imaging Science and Technology which in turn is part of the faculty of Applied Sciences of Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands.
The laboratory covers three research areas: sound control, seismic imaging and medical acoustical imaging. We, five staff members, fifteen PhD & post-doctoral students and three technicians, collaborate on an international level with industry and other (medical) research institutes. The medical group does research on modelling, inversion and imaging of both linear and non-linear acoustic wave fields. Examples of applications are IntraVascular Ultrasound, breast cancer detection, hyperthermia and echo-cardiography.
Information and application
For further details on the position you are welcome to contact Dr Koen W.A. van Dongen, phone +31-(0)15-27 83378, e-mail: K.W.A.vanDongen@tudelft.nl; or visit www.tnw.tudelft.nl, www.ist.tudelft.nl and www.ak.tn.tudelft.nl.
To apply, please send a letter of motivation together with a detailed CV (including marks for all exams), a list of three references, a list of publications with a summary of your MSc thesis and a copy of your identity card, before February 17, 2008 to Dr. K.W.A. van Dongen, Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Laboratory of Acoustical Imaging and Sound Control, TNW-IST, Lorentzweg 1, 2628 CJ Delft, The Netherlands; or apply online to K.W.A.vanDongen@tudelft.nl.
