1. PhD in The Impact of Enterprise Performance Management on Management Control

Assessment and feedback are fundamental to student learning: without feedback, students' ability to understand complex concepts or to develop academic skills is likely to be very limited. However, students can experience difficulties and frustrations as they transition from a relatively didactic pedagogy at school to more discursive and developmental pedagogies which are common in higher education. One area which can be particularly difficult for students is in the changing nature of assessment and feedback.

Proposals which focus on an investigation of student engagement with assessment and feedback are welcomed. Possible topics include: a longitudinal study of students' experiences as they transition from school to higher education, and throughout their university experience; the phenomenological exploration of different forms of engagement, and how engagement changes over time; and the influence of students' social networks on their engagement with assessment and feedback. Proposals should build on the work of the ASKe Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Brookes, and the FDTL feedback project. Applicants are invited to view information at http://www.business.brookes.ac.uk/learningandteaching/aske/ and https://mw.brookes.ac.uk/display/eswaf/Home

2. PhD in Leadership in learning and teaching in Higher Education

Enterprise Performance Management (EPM), also known as Business Performance Management (BPM), integrates ideas from Performance Management with Business Intelligence and Information Management. An important aspect of EPM is the – real-time – monitoring of actual performance against targets, based on data from the business processes and their outcomes. When organisations apply EPM, ubiquitous availability of real-time (and accurate) performance data would, in principle, allow for more ‘democratic’ or empowering control approaches to be employed. This would not just free up management time and make organisations more responsive, it would also respond to long-standing calls to curtail the use of formal, centralised management control approaches. Do EPM Systems in practice really change management control towards more democratic methods?
