1 PhD Studentship in Mathematics reserved to foreign students
University of Bari announces its Doctoral Program in Mathematics. The deadline for applications to this Doctoral Program is on December 15th, 2008.
For the admission to the Program, the students interested must follow the instructions specified in “Call for Applications“.
During their Doctoral studies, the students may visit others Departments in Italy or outside Italy (for at most 18 months) to collaborate and, eventually, prepare their Doctoral theses. In such a period their
scholarships will be increased with respect the usual amount.
The length of the program is three (3) years of full-time academic research. The grant amounts to almost 1100 Euro per month.
The Doctoral Program in Mathematics is centred on an interdisciplinary perspective. The program covers seven main areas (or curriculum):
1. Analysis;
2. Algebra;
3. Geometry;
4. Mathematical Physics;
5. Probability;
6. Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computation;
7. Mathematics for Finance;
and the students have to work in one of these areas. Candidates are also expected to complete a thesis within this period.
Applicants are required to have finished an undergraduate program of at least four years, for instance a Bachelor and Master degree, in the scientific area of Mathematics or Physics or Computer Science.
Feel free to contact the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program, Prof. Luciano Lopez, (lopezl[ at ]dm.uniba.it) for any reason.
Application deadline: December 15, 2008 h:12,00
How to apply: Applications should be made using the application form.

Austria PhD position in Evolutionary Ecology (evolution of sex) 2009 2010
Institute for Limnology (Mondsee) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Austria
PhD position in Evolutionary Ecology (evolution of sex)
Application deadline: 15. December 2008
A 3-year PhD position is available in the lab of Dr. Claus-Peter Stelzer
at the Institute for Limnology in Mondsee (near Salzburg, Austria), to
study the causes and consequences of transitions to obligate
parthenogenesis in monogonont rotifers.
The project is a combination of
laboratory experiments, molecular techniques, and field sampling. The
summary of the project funded by the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF),
as well as further information on the lab can be found at
http://www.oeaw.ac.at/limno/personnel/stelzer/stelzer.htm
Applicants should have a Master’s or diploma degree in biology, or a
related field. Experience in experimental design, statistics and
PCR-based molecular genetic methods would be advantageous, as well as
some “affinity towards using technical equipment” (e.g. our automated
culture systems).
The Institute for Limnology is located in the Salzkammergut lake area,
30 km east of the City of Salzburg - which is also the location of the
nearest university. The Institute has a staff complement of
approximately 25, including 10 research scientists, who work on various
areas in ecophysiology and evolutionary ecology of aquatic organisms.
The PhD student will receive a salary according to the FWF pay scale.
Applicants should send a cover letter summarizing their research
background and interest in the position, a CV, and contact information
for two referees (everything as one PDF document) to
claus-peter.stelzeroeaw.ac.at, by 15. Dec. 2008. The ideal starting
date would be 1. Feb. 2009.
