DAAD German Studies Research Grant

These specialized DAAD program provides up to five German Studies Research scholarships to qualified undergraduate and graduate students who are nominated by their department / program chairs. The grant can be used for short-term research (one to two months), either in North America or in Germany.

The program was designed to research and promote the exploration of the cultural, political, historical, economic and social aspects of modern and contemporary affairs of a German inter-and multidisciplinary perspective.

Criteria: Eligibility Requirements:

Doctoral Students in the humanities and social science disciplines in the process of preparing their thesis proposals on German modern subjects may be nominated. Students whose memory of proposals have already been officially accepted are not eligible for nomination. The intent of the program is to provide an opportunity for short-term exploratory research to determine the viability or the scope of their proposals dissertations. The program is not intended to supplement or replace the groundwork for doctorate abroad, which should lag behind in search of short-term stay at least one semester.

From the master’s level graduate students in humanities and social sciences or earning a certificate to work on a project in German studies can be nominated for the award by their department and / or the program director. Applicants must have completed a minimum of three courses in German Studies (literature, history, politics, and other areas) at the time of appointment.



All applicants must have completed two years of college-level German language studies. Applicants must be aged under 32 at the beginning of the grant period.

The grants are limited to United States citizens who are enrolled full time at the university, which appoints them.

Includes: Search help with a value of $ 1500 to $ 2500 is available to individual scholars and aims to offset travel and living during the phase of active research. Support may be granted for stays in Germany as part of programs for study abroad.

Deadline: Application deadlines are May 1, 2008 and November 1, 2008.
